Why I Became A Financial Advisor
By Timothy Brown, MBA, CFA®, CFP®, RICP®, AIF®
My decision to become a financial advisor all started with Forbes magazine. I was a sophomore in college at the time and my brother-in-law, a portfolio manager, gave me a subscription to the magazine. Already pretty analytical by nature, I got hooked on the finance industry and loved the idea of researching companies as an investment analyst. I switched majors to finance and accounting, and the rest is history!
Except it wasn’t a straight path from point A to point B, because my career path changed as time went on. I graduated from the University of Colorado and envisioned a fulfilling career as an investment banker. I eventually earned an MBA from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management as well. But the more experience I got under my belt, including as an investment analyst, corporate banker, and consultant to major firms, I realized the missing piece…I loved working with people. I wanted a job where I could combine my passion for numbers with my desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives. That’s part 2 of my story.
Fast-Forward To Today
While working as a management consultant, I started Brown Wealth Management, a fee-only, independent financial planning firm. Early success told me I had made a good move, and a mere two years later, I gave up the corporate consulting job so I could help people with their finances full time. I’ve never looked back!
With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, as well as being a Chartered Financial Analyst™ (CFA®), Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®), Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RIPC®), and Accredited Investment Fiduciary™ (AIF®), I get to use my passion and knowledge to help others feel empowered to make the best financial decisions for their future.
As founder and president, I lead the firm’s investment and financial planning strategies and provide objective, personalized advice that prioritizes each client’s goals, values, and life situation so they can be prepared for whatever comes their way.
The Best Part
That’s the formal explanation of what I do, but truthfully, the best days I have in my role are the ones where I have back-to-back meetings with clients. Even after all these years, it all comes down to my relationships with those I have the privilege to serve. We all know that money, and how you handle it, can make or break your life. That’s why I love walking my clients through their finances, showing them options, and helping them make changes, so they can experience financial peace of mind and impact future generations. Our clients become our family, and there’s just nothing more fulfilling than celebrating with them when they achieve a goal or reach a milestone. What gets me out of bed every morning is simply my drive to help as many people as possible.
